Noisy neighbours? Here's a solution...
Toronto has one of the highest denisty of condo developments in North America. There are a variety of positive features to condo living from easy access to public transportation or walking distance to work, access to ammenities such as movie theatres and restaurants and simply the luxury of not sitting in your car for hours on end on the 401.One of the drawbacks of condo or townhome living however, is the chance that you might be listening to your neighbours' lives -- and they might be listening to yours. Perhaps you can hear high heels clacking on the floors above you, or your next door neighbour's parties or that brand new sound system they've recently installed.
There is, however, a solution to the noise problem. A product called "QuietRock" is a sound-proofing drywall that can be used during construction of your new home or added as a retrofit right on top of your home's original drywall. It can also be used under a variety of floorings from marble to hardwood as well as for ceilings. One layer of QuietRock is the equivalent sound barrier as eight sheets of drywall.

Their information is quite misleading. One sheet does not equal 8 sheets of standard drywall. There's no test and no data that has ever supported this.

This new use of “visco-elastic polymer” technology is pioneering the way that noise will be dealt with for years to come. It can be difficult, if not somewhat incomprehensible, to understand how QuietRock’s multi-layered, pre-engineered wall panel can convert acoustic energy into heat, but that is what new technologies are doing for us these days. It was just a few years ago that my 40 GB HDD computer was all the rage. Now that all fits on my tiny iPod!
The reference that QuietRock is equal to 8 sheets of regular gypsum [acoustically] is derived from the National Research Council's many sound tests performed on this product, all of which are available at www.quietsolution.com. Many of our products are also UL and ULC fire-rated.
To effectively achieve an STC [read dB] level equal to that of QuietRock, it would require hanging 8 comparative thickness standard gypsum boards [or over 10 batts of insulation]. This is not a claim, but rather fact.
In fact, building a double stud wall barely surpass what 1 single sheet of QuietRock on one side of a single stud wall [with regular gypsum on the other side] provides.
This is a tested and patented product, with thousands of applications Canada-wide including in schools, government buildings, houses and condos et., not to mention home theatres.
The added benefit of QuietRock is that you can overlay it on an existing wall, provided there is studding [minimum 1 5/8 furring channel] in behind; there is no need to rip the existing wall down.
